New and Remarkable at the Half Tide Shops

BY CAPTAIN D

FOR ME
the businesses that have comprised the Half Tide Shops on the Bar Harbor Road in Trenton are half forgotten. This could just be me. I haven't really been a prospect for karate lessons, used furniture, cleaning services, or vacuum cleaners. Still nothing here reached out and grabbed me. Like my recollections, the big block letters spelling out Half Tide Shops are faded half away. Nobody seemed to care.

But things are changing markedly. Bright new business are opening shops here.

It began a  year ago when Denise Daugherty opened the Acadia Clipper Beauty Salon. The name itself suggests heightened energy. Clippers, ships with three or more masts and square rigs,  were the fastest ships the world seen.

Denise,  a seasoned professional who operated a shop in Bar Harbor for eighteen years, gave the place a shot of adrenaline.

Following in Denise's footsteps are Jonathan Tardiff and Brian Stan.

Tardiff began in Bangor, opening, with Stephen King's blessings, Needful Things. It was from King that he got the name. King wrote the creepy bestseller "Needful Things" about a curious little shop in a small Maine town. A year ago, Tardiff opened his second Needful Things on High Street in Ellsworth. Tardiff has handled all sorts of stuff while specializing in gold, silver, and other precious metals.

In Trenton, Tradiff is calling his shop Acadia Antiques. He is still buying gold, silver and other precious metals, but is now moving more heavily into general antiques. He'll buy single pieces or entire estates.

Next to Acadia Aniques is a new venture, Poseidon Firearms, a first-class oasis for sportsmen. Brian Stan, himself a lifelong sportsman, provides quality firearms and sporting goods at reasonable prices. Stan extends friendly, honest, and professional service to folks shopping for guns and accessories, ammunition, fishing rods, reels, and tackle, ice fishing supplies, hunting gear, licenses, and bait.

Half tide. Does this term suggest an intertidal zone that's half empty or half full? Right now we believe it means the latter. We believe it suggests an optimistic scenario that can only get better and better. For Trenton's Half Tide Shops, the future has never been brighter.
